Births:
1956: Randy Rhoades
1956: Peter Buck R.E.M. guitarist
Death: 1988: Roy Orbison

1968: Elvis Presley receives one of 66,000 signed letters from President Richard Nixon to be a potential administrative office holder.


1969: The infamous rock concertplace in Altamont, CA, at the speedway, featuring Jefferson Airplane, Santana, Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young, and Headliner the Rolling Stones, who organized the show as a free "thank you" concert. The Stones hire Hell's Angels for security, resulting in the deaths of four people in the crowd of 300,000 including Meredith Hunter, stabbed to death by the Angels, two people also died in a hit-and-run, another drowned and 850 were injured.
1980: For the last time John Lennon spends his day in a studio where he mixes Yoko Ono's "Walking On Thin Ice."
1986: Ringo becomes the first Beatle to use his name to advertise a commercial product, Sun Country wine cooler.
1993: At a video shoot for Travis Tritt's remake of the Eagles' "Take It Easy," the Eagles themselves reunite and decide to reform for new songs and a tour.
1995: Michael Jackson collapses in a New York theater during a rehearsal for an upcoming TV special and is hospitalized.
2005: Robbie Williams accepted substantial libel damages over claims that he is secretly homosexual. The People newspaper, Star and Hot Stars magazines in 2004 published stories alleging Mr. Williams had engaged in casual homosexual sex.

1975: Paul Simon's Still Crazy After All These Years album hits #1
1986: "Next Time I Fall" with Peter Cetera and Amy Grant tops charts remained there for a week. This would be Amy Grant's first number 1 Pop single.
